For all you style experts and fashion historians out there, who remembers the rationing of clothing during World War II? Lol, I don't really that much, but I do kind of remember sitting through a Survey Of Fashion lecture in college where we discussed the implications and impact of the war on clothing and costume, how garments were made to be more streamlined, simplistic and utilitarian due to such restrictions and limited materials. More so than that, I do know this jacket gets its origin from war-time uniforms (field jackets worn by troops in Vietnam) Some call it military, others call it cargo, yet still others call it utility jacket. Call it what you will, for this post, I'm emphasizing utility found in this military inspired jacket. I find so much utility in it because not only does it have multiple pockets for holding multiple items in true utility form, but more importantly, it can be worn and layered beautifully with so many different things in your closet, which provides so much value to the wearer. Of course, you can throw a denim jacket over many pieces, but doing that with this jacket lends a different vibe due to its color and shape, while adding a dash of utilitarian style and hipness to your look. Speaking of color, it's consistent with Army approved - "Olive Green 107," lol! Now back to my selling points, you can even wear it closed as a top and put a belt around it, the possibilities are many! I can't forget to mention how the jacket has three pockets instead of the typical four and the hem has some cool variations and nice topstitching details, also giving interest. Like with many other classic pieces that have military origin, a utility jacket has proved to be immune to the seasonal cycles of designer fashion. It's worn by and retained its cred with elites, and has lost no prestige with youth even as us older folks experiment with the same look. I consider it a staple to have in your closet, nestled between your jean jacket and your trench coat. For this post I just decided to pair the jacket with another piece found at the same time from Anthropologie - a striped tunic in muted values as to compliment the color value of the jacket. I went on to add my previously owned WhoWhatWear Target collection denim skirt, and amped up the sass with last year's mules from Zara (similar jeans and mules linked) finishing off with my daughter's personality glasses for some hipness to the look that not only speaks streetstyle but #SybilStreetSTYLe. Since I didn't want to wear the tunic buttoned up, I just layered it with a taupe color underpinning. This long tunic is a really soft and comfortable linen and looks just as cute worn without the tie-knot in the front, hanging long in front as well as the back. I see it left untied, long with skinny jeans with a heeled sandal or pointy toe pump with some massive toe cleavage going on, with a choker! Or a pair of cropped jeans and flats or kicks! Just a couple ideas, but however you choose to style it, make it your own, unique to you that gives you a great deal of utility!
