Transforming Style From The Inside Out, Women Of Style & Faith, Nakkiyah Gant of Melded Beauty

It's Wednesday and we are back once again with #WomenOfStyleAndFaithWednesday! Since we love the phrase, what's goes around comes around", we are circling back today and re-highlighting super mom, natural hair diva,  eclectic fashionista and founder/creator of Melded Beauty, Nakkiyah Gant! Since our last conversation with this naturalista, Nakkiyah made the hop, skip and jump to Atlanta GA, relocating her three young ones from the DC area to now call ATL home. It was not only a skip and a jump but a leap of faith, as she made the move with no job. Although non-employed was her status she's trusting in the ultimate supplier, waymaker and provider and HE, Jehovah Jireh has proven His faithfulness and provision every time!

She speaks more in depth about her challenges, her faith and her style in our initial interview. Read her complete original interview here

The busy enterprising mom is still at work raising her family, building her hair/body care line and strategizing her next move to position herself as a innovator and influencer in the marketplace.

When asked about any new projects and endeavors she had going on, this is what she had to say: "I'm in school taking an accelerated Business Intelligence class at Emory University, which is heavily concentrated in Big Data Analysis. This will add to my skill set and leverage my MBA. This will allow me to compete in the corporate world as well as strengthen and hone my entrepreneurial human capital and endeavors."

We also realized that she is not the only creative biz savvy individual in the family, but so is her oldest daughter Niara, who is now 14-years-old. She shared with us that Niara always loved art, but Nakkiyah as a full-time mom on a budget was unable to take her to the nail salon encouraged her to do her nails herself. Niara began practicing and watching YouTube videos when she was 11-years-old and from there "Nails By Niara" was born. Take a look at some of Niara's nail designs below.

Birthed out Nakkiyah's life journey, and the process and experiences found therein that got her to the end result, was Melded Beauty created. The product was developed to provide the most luxurious skin and hair imaginable.  It is made of whipped organic cocoa butter infused with organic coconut oil, vitamin E and now also offered with shea butter too.  Melded Beauty is great not only for hair, but for blemishes, stretch marks and scars as well. 

"Melded Beauty will initially start off as a hair and body product company. Eventually it will expand to a full line of all natural hair care and body products. It will start off as a home based business, which will be sold using the Internet (social media) and phone ordering, and eventually expand to mall kiosk, and even a store. I would like Melded Beauty to be a brand that ministers to the world by its philosophy and the way it conducts business."

"I love Urban Outfitters, Zara, and of course TJ Maxx to rock style on a budget.  As of late, I've really been feeling pieces found at Free People such as this dress I'm wearing in this picture."

"Several years ago the decision was made for me to become a full time stay-at- home mother, which meant a one-income household.  Immediately I started to find ways to “cut back” on “extra” expenses. One of those cut backs were the salon (hair and nails). I had just learned I was pregnant with my son and decided I would not use any more chemicals in my hair until after he was born. During that time the strangest thing happened, I realized how much healthier my hair had become. I kept it in braids and twists and it was so much easier for me."

"Melded Beauty will be a platform to minister to young people, men and women, to let them know that there is a purpose for their lives and if they hone their gifts and talents the sky is the limit to what they can do. Every experience will be used for God’s glory if they commit their entire will to him. They do not have to be limited by how someone else defines great. Transforming Style From the Inside Out, Women of Style & Faith Series, presents Zaria Brown, Grad Student & Founder of the blog, "A Dose Of Fab"

Zaria tell our readers a little about yourself, what you do professionally, and about your blog. What about these things inspires you most?

I’m 24 years old, born and raised in South Carolina, (Gaffney.) I graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2015 with a degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice, and after that I began working for a year (hated it) only to end up back in school. Now, I am a full time graduate student currently pursuing my Masters of Human Resources.

I launched “A Dose of Fab” in March of 2015, so I’m almost at my two year mark. I knew nothing about creating a site, or blogging, but I’ve always loved to shop and put different looks together. I wanted to put myself out there and show other young women what can happen when you believe in yourself and take that chance whether you have the support of others or not. My blog was and still is my outlet to do what I love even if it isn’t my full time job or major of study.

How do you couple your faith with what you do professionally and as a blogger?

Being a full time student and full time blogger has to be the hardest things I’ve ever done. My faith is tested all the time, and there have been moments where school has been extremely stressful, and times where I felt like my blog may have been fading into the background. I always have to make sure I don’t neglect either one, because it’s a reason why I’m doing them both. I pray on both of them CONSTANTLY. I don’t know exactly where either one will take me, in the next decade or so, but God continues to bless me with the resources and support to continue both, and as long as He’s on board, there’s no end in sight for either one.

Please speak about the role of faith in your life. How do you manage and a maintain balance in the different aspects of your professional & personal life along with your relationship with God?

My relationship with God comes first. If I have time to spend blogging, hangout out with my line sisters and friends, or whatever else, there’s time for God. I’m a firm believer in you make time for who and what you want. Where I am today, what I have today, is because of God, period. That goes with school as well. I make it my mission to read and apply the Word just like I apply what I learn in my classes from day-to-day.

 What advice can you give to others who have the same interests as you?

You can have all the dreams in the world, but you have to pray on it first. As I said before, you make time for what you want, and blogging in general is no easy task that you can just do at the last minute. People will say, “it’s so many people out there doing it already,” but I say yeah, true, but there’s only one YOU. Pray, plan, execute that plan, and make it happen. If it’s in you, it’s in you. I’m a full time student living off a refund check, and yet God is still making a way for my bills to be paid and for me to continue my blog. There’s always a way. 

Tell me about the any challenges you’ve faced, how you’ve endured and what keeps you wedded to what you do?

Challenges I faced with both my blog and my studies were both very new and I had no clue what I was doing. If I’m ever struggling in the classroom, I’m getting tutored or always going to my academics advisors. When I started blogging, I had to learn how to write, network, master social media, get a photographer who could bring my vision to life, and stay consistent. Both were serious wake up calls. That’s why I have to pray, plan, stay organized, and execute what needs to be done. It’s what I love to do. I have to talk to God constantly about it all, and I get on His nerves because sometimes I’m like “now did You hear me?” I’m just persistent with Him even though He already knows what I need. The biggest thing too, everything happens for a reason, I may not know why, but it is what it is. I trust God and keep it moving.

What about fashion do you love most? Are there any new trends or any particular designers/stores/brands that you just love and even prefer when actually shopping for clothes or when reviewing certain pieces to blog?  I hear a lot of times that bloggers review and post based on their commitments and relationships w/ brands, so I’m curious if your posts reflect your personal style 100% or a mix of personal and the business side of blogging?

What I love most about fashion is that I can do whatever I want to do with it. It doesn’t have to be a specific brand, and I shop EVERYWHERE! I love a good thrift store, I’m never against a trip to the mall, and online shopping is my go to because it’s easy and they have the best sales!  I don’t have too many brands that I die over, but if I had to choose, it would be Boohoo, GoJane, Fashion Nova, Forever 21, and Shein, and Romwe. However, like I stated before, I will shop anywhere if that place of business has something to offer. These are my favorite because 9/10, I’ll find something that I may or may not need, but what I can use or what I want. Every outfit I post is a review for me. Whether I bought a certain piece or a company sent it to me, I’m going to be honest with my readers about it. It has to reflect who I am, and my style because I refuse to put something out there under my name because it was free.

I have a witty style question that I like asking all you stylish gals of faith, “What’s Your Style Innuendo” (the way you would like others to consider or view what your style is without you even saying a word when they see you)?

This is a different one. I would like for others to describe my style as eclectic and unpredictable. With every post I want to keep my readers guessing. So I try to incorporate the different elements of my wardrobe that are still “my style,” but also can be something that someone who has a totally different style can still be able to relate to.

Now, how would you describe your overall style (lifestyle) – dress, education, personality, things you do, your circle etc?

I personally would describe my overall style as just glammed up, super girly, heels, makeup, the whole works, but It can also be toned down (I wear sneakers too.) As far as my lifestyle, I’m just goofy, always laughing, trying to stay focused on my academics, while trying to balance family and friends, but my family and friends are busy as well, so we’re all supportive. I’m huge on family, it’s crazy. I wasn’t raised by my biological parents, so my godparents took me in, and I have a testimony with this. I am here and who I am because God blessed me with my god family. As far as things I do, I’m an avid reader! I’ve loved books since I was a kid, and I try to make time to read anything not related to my academics as much as I can, when I can. I’m an extreme introvert, and I embrace it. I love being around people, but when I need to decompress, I take my time with it, and I don’t come out until I’m ready.

When I say being raised by my godparents being a testimony, my mother has been a drug addict in and out of prison for most of my life. I've been living with my godparents since I was a child, and it was not the easiest thing to face not having my biological parents and being away from my younger brother and sister.  However, I'm here today because of my godparents, and I am strong because God has kept me, and not only me, but my brother and sister as well. All three of us are college educated trying to make something out of ourselves in spite of what we've been through. Not having my mother around a lot has been very hard because there is a void, but that's where I lean on God. He's strong where I'm weak and He's who and whatever I need Him to be.

How has your overall style evolved in the past few years and why?

I’ve always been a girly girl, but when I first started high school, you couldn’t tell me I was going to be trading in all of my sneakers for heels. I went from a semi girly girl to a full blown fashionista by the time I was 17. Prints, heels, thrifting, I wanted to be fabulous, but in my own way. I keep with the trends, but I’ve always done it my way. It’s rare that I ask for the opinions of others when it comes to my blog posts or what I’m wearing because only I can be me, only I can dress me, and feel confident in what I’m wearing.

This blog series is about not only highlighting careers, businesses, ministry efforts and accomplishments, but transforming style from the inside out, therefore, how can one transform their style and faith in a positive progressive manner, and do so without compromise? 

That’s a different question too. I haven’t had to compromise my relationship with God because of what I chose to wear or vice versa. Me personally, if I go out with friends, yes I may wear a dress, but it’s more midi style rather than a body con that ‘s going to ride up with every step I take. There comes a moment where we as women have to dress how we want to be addressed. Also, dress for where you’re going. When I got to college, I had to understand you can’t wear club shoes to church. Invest in your wardrobe, because what’s appropriate here may not be appropriate there.

As an added bonus question for our readers, I was curious to know how some of my interviewees, especially those of you that are a bit younger felt about tattoos. What are your thoughts as a believer in wearing tattoos-  are they just like wearing an accessory and you do wear it as an accessory, or are you opposed to them because of scripture?

I have two tattoos myself. I got my first one when I was 18 and my second when I was 19. Both mean something to me, and though many are against them for different reasons, I don’t regret getting them. They were never an accessory for me because they hold value. (Though there are some out there that mean nothing.)  I’ve even considered getting another one. Who are we to judge one another? Also, if we want to go down the route of being anti-tattoos, we have to be anti-earrings too, because our ears were made for us to hear, not to have pieces of metal hanging off of them.

 What’s next on the horizon for Zaria, and A Dose Of Fab?

Well, I’ve started a Youtube channel (adoseoffab), and it is definitely different because I’m learning about vlogging and how to be behind and in front of the lens at the same time. I hope that it will give my readers/subscribers another way to get to know who I am.

Somalia Alsobrooks: CEO, Anti-Sex Trafficking Advocate,  & Founder of the Restored Voices Empowerment Ministry and Movement.

When we first met Somalia in 2016, we touched on her work as a PR professional with the American Chemical Society. Today the whole landscape has change based on two words God spoke to her in her prayer journal, which led this enterprising young woman to launch Restored Voices Ministry. Since that time, the ministry has grown tremendously and even become a movement. Then her mantra was, No More Missed Opportunities, now in 2017 it is, Year Of Accomplishment. In this season of accomplishment she has created a new business- See It In Writing, using her gift to help others succeed. We are overjoyed about how Somalia has progressed since our initial interview! She is living a restored life; after relinquishing the baggage of past hurts and self-esteem issues, she shifted to find true identity, joy, confidence and an abundance of freedom in God, while helping others do the same. Somalia let's discuss what you do professionally and your involvement with Human Trafficking advocacy.

I am the Founder and CEO of See It in Writing where our credo is to, “Create a new you on paper for a more confident you in person.” We bridge your brand, business, passion, ideas, and profession to captivating language that gets you noticed, paid, and put in demand.  Some of our incredible services include resume building and interview coaching, website content development, professional bios, copywriting, and more!  I can honestly say that I love what I do…  Helping others to succeed (with less stress) is a gift I enjoy reopening everyday.

Yes, I am also an anti-sex trafficking advocate and volunteer with Safe House of Hope in Baltimore, MD.  I have been a part of their late-night street outreach team for about two years, which involves being on the frontline and the willingness to step into the world of trafficked survivors, pimps/traffickers, and buyers.  I have often been asked if I am ever afraid, but really, I am more afraid of not fulfilling my purpose, than worrying about my safety.  Call me crazy, but when you know you are called by God to take action on a specific issue, you have to move on it!  I also provide one-on-one mentorship to survivors, so there is little to no room for fear, doubt, worry, or distractions.

What truly inspires you?

Loaded question! Being a champion in the lives of others and making a Godly impact in the world is what inspires me.  No matter where I go, I am typically the biggest cheerleader in the room, and I love that about myself!  It is always easier to share my Christian faith if first; I have shared my Christian LOVE.

How does your faith play into what you do professionally and how do you find balance in your two worlds - personal and professional - while staying aligned with the Father?

Wow, hands down it’s God’s grace.  A while ago I came into the revelation that God’s grace isn’t the license for me to live recklessly.  Rather, His grace is the fuel that enables me to accomplish the purpose that He has placed inside of me and to live in total victory while doing so.  That said, my hands are in a lot of pots right now, but even when I feel overloaded, I refer back to the passage of scripture found in Nehemiah 8:10 which states, “… Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

As for balance...  Enjoying every moment of LIFE is essential.  Whether it’s a trip to my beloved Krispy Kreme, quality time with family and friends, or skydiving, taking the time to slow down when necessary is extremely beneficial and actually leads to better productivity! 

Please share some advice with others who have interests in what you do and want to get involved with the movement, but don't know where to start.

The advice I would give to others who are interested in anti-sex trafficking work is to know your “why,” please!  Know why you want to get involved and the role you want to play.  Straight talk – If you come in with the “superhero mentality,” you won’t last long.  Seriously.  This was the mindset I had initially and quickly learned that I can’t be anyone’s savior.  However, what I could be was a mentor, source of encouragement, and friend.  If you get involved thinking that you’re going to be the hero that changes someone’s life overnight, it doesn’t work like that.  The healing I see take place is a process and requires commitment from, both the advocate and survivor. 

Once you know your why, get educated on the facts, volunteer with active organizations in your local community, attend conferences and trainings, and network with other volunteers and/or professionals who are already active leaders and advocates.

Keep in mind, everyone can do something in the fight against sex trafficking, and there are a plethora of ways to get involved.  Whether it’s writing a care note to a survivor, donating to an organization, participating in the National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, or assisting with an outreach, the opportunities are endless.   

Tell me about the challenges you’ve faced, how you've endured and what keeps you going?

As a business owner, there have definitely been days when I’ve wondered if I bit off more than I could chew.  Right now, I’m a solopreneur.  So that means I’m the CEO, Office Administrator, Communications Manager, HR, you name it!  If something isn’t going right, I have to look in the mirror.  That has been difficult as times, but it definitely helps to prevent complacency and quitting, which is not an option.

As for my advocacy work, I will start by saying I don’t know if I will ever forget my first night of street outreach.  I was an emotional wreck on the way home.  I had watched documentaries, attended multiple conferences and seminars, been through a series of trainings, etc., but actually being on the streets made the existence of domestic sex trafficking a deeper reality.  However, I knew I had to reach a point of emotional control in order to be effective.  I can handle a lot more now, but I still have moments when I break down… it can get pretty heavy.  Ultimately, I draw strength from God and having amazing friends to talk to is a plus.

Moving on to some lighthearted frilly stuff - Fashion & Style! Which designers are you a fan of and what are your favorites stores for shopping?

A girl can never go wrong with BCBG, and I can typically be found in the isles of Lord & Taylor, Zara (I love that store), and NY&Company. 

 Are there any new trends or concepts in fashion that’s piqued your interest?

I love the shirts that tie up at the collar, floral prints, and there’s nothing like a tailored jacket… It’s a must in every closet. 

I have a witty style question that I like asking all you stylish gals of faith, “What’s your Style Innuendo (the way you would like others to consider or view what your style is without you even saying a word when they see you)? How would you describe your overall style – dress, education, personality etc. and how has it evolved from say a few years ago until now?

I want people to see me and think “sophisticated swag,” hands down.  Currently, my overall style is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I’ve discovered a passion for God and for life over the last few years that has been life-changing.  With that, came an abundance of freedom.  So yeah, if you ask me, I feel like Superwoman.   

This blog series is about transforming style from the inside out, therefore, how can one transform their style and faith in a positive progressive manner, and do so without compromise?

Matthew 6:33 is one of my favorite scriptures that states, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  In order to transform our faith, we have to transform our focus.  If we seek and keep God first in all that we do, compromise cannot easily have place in our lives.  Yes, it will try, but as women of faith, we have the power inside of us to maintain an absolute “NO” against those things that would taint our walk with God. 

As it relates to style, I think it is important for people to remember who and what they represent.  Remaining current and trendy is important, and going out looking your best matters! I say look in the mirror from EVERY angle when shopping, and make sure what you’re rocking doesn’t compromise your character or values. 

What’s next on the horizon for you, what's the next phase for Somalia? 

This is a big question...I love it!  2017 is my Year of Accomplishment, so the sun is just rising for me.  There will be MAJOR business building for See It In Writing, which makes me feel like a kid on Christmas Eve.   In addition to being a business owner, I am also the Founder of Restored Voices, a movement/ministry committed to propelling women to A) Recognize their identity and voice in Jesus Christ; B) Restore their faith in God; and C) Resound their voice of victory.  This will be an incredible year for the movement and I look forward to building a dynamic sisterhood with countless women.  It is important for me to encourage women to know that they are not voiceless.  Like their fingerprint, their voice is the only one of its kind, and all of us hold a God-given greatness that the world needs to hear!

Leather That's Fine As Wine

Let me break it to you, I love leather, I really do.  Doesn't matter if it's real or vegan, fair or cold weather, I just simply love leather! I also love rich, saturated colors especially for fall so when I spotted this dress in faux leather in this rich wine color, I went for it. Of course, this dress can be styled a few different ways but for this post and because mama has put on quite a few pounds, I had to leave this baby open in the front. It was my intention to get a shot showing the dress both open and closed anyway, to provide more options and since I decided to layer with an underpinning, as I did want to show a more clean closed buttoned look (thinking office ready). Nope, didn't happen, oh well thank God for the top layered below. Moving on, after seeing the blue in the print of the top I felt my super bad thigh-hi velvet boots would wear nicely and give an even nicer pop of color and rich texture. These rich hues of wine and blue with accessories in gold tones really jumped off set against the colors in this cool graffiti wall. #SybilStreetSTYLe

Merry & Bright is how I would describe my style this holiday!

Rough and Tumble w/Some Sparkle and Shine

Hey tough girl, I know she's somewhere in there, after all we all have a little bad girl in us. Don't deny it, LOL! When I peeped this metallic skirt my tough girl within me started to manifest. I could only envision how I would style this skirt to give it some edge- rough and tumble stood up! I'd been seeing quite a few metallic pleat skirts this season and this particular one piqued my interest because it has details and interest different than all the others.  The high shine was something serious and what appeared at first glance to be pleating was not actually pleats, but was achieved with a topstitching technique similar to pintucking which gives the look of pleats. The direction in which the top stitching was done created diamond shapes in the skirt. I also included a link for another skirt that is pleats but with a groovy finish.

So for look number one, I styled the skirt with a cold shoulder sweatshirt which too had some nice detail- beading & the open shoulders were asymmetrical rather than symmetrical and on one arm two openings opposed to one - different than all the other cold shoulder tops that have flooded the stores right now.  I gave it some tough girl edge by throwing on my old moto jacket, which is really one of my prop jackets in my wardrobe kit. I finished it off with some cool ankle boots with stud detailing (former post; see below) equally as tough but fly! Viola, there we have our rough with some shine. Look two, further down below,  I added some sparkle and remixed the skirt with another ankle boot yet this time with glitz and glitter. I changed the top, threw on my long wool vest with fur accent and gave another layer of interest by putting on a belt.  Sparkle and shine but still edgy and chic. All The Way Up Blue Velvet Crush

Smooth or crushed, velvet is everywhere and so on trend this season. Another hot topic in fashion trends right now are thigh hi over-the-knee boots. So when I happened on the mix of the two - OTK boots in crushed velvet in this rich blue color I knew I had to cop and put my twist on them. My first take - others will follow - is pairing this cool deconstructed terry tunic worn over leather like leggings accessorized with a funky, glitzy, sequin fanny pack and a phat gold link chain. I love the comfort and funkiness of this tunic (currently on sale). The shredding which reminded me of cobwebs was giving so much cool texture and then I amped it up with the boots in this rich, fab color and brought it in for the kill with this cool fanny pack.  Being blue, was giving life and has never been cooler! #SybilStreetSTYLe

Fall Floral Knit Dress That Blooms With Detail

Hey Beauties! We've had a bit of a roller coaster at the beginning of this autumn season here on the east coast with temps being very unseasonal - one day it's warm and the next it's cool. But Fall is finally here and I'm excited to share this oh so classy, oh so cool, oh so comfy knit dress (by Knit & Knotted) with that screams oh so Fall. Building the Bridge of Style

What do bridges symbolize?  They always lead to somewhere and are pretty much the only means in which to get to that somewhere on land unless your'e a really great long-distance swimmer.  For me, it also meant the chance for new opportunities for both my daughter and myself in an entirely different state and town filling in the gap that would serve to disqualify those opportunities and chances. Brooklyn is home to this iconic Brooklyn Bridge pictured in these shots and in 2015, for over a year Brooklyn was home for us, leaving hubby & daddy, brother & son , mom & dad behind in the DMV. It was the chance for the opportunity for my daughter to resume and further expand her dreams, as she once resided in NY living her dreams as a professional model a couple years prior and for me to expand my clientele and network as a professional wardrobe stylist. It didn't quite pan out for either of us as we hoped and prayed. While she did sign with a great, reputable commercial agency, she had problems finding a home with a fashion agency as before - either her look was too commercial for most or the former one she was with had issues with that so-say extra inch that was on her hips. Prior to that they had issues that she cut her hair short, smh. I had challenges, as I had already established myself as a stylist in the DMV, so of course that's where I received most of my work, thus I had jobs booked so when things came up in NY for work I had to decline because I was already booked in dear old DC. I never went to NY with the idea of conquering and setting up shop but Hubs and I kinda thought if I was going to be there then why not obtain work in that market. You might ask, well why did you go there, if not to conquer? Well I went to NY to reside because my husband requested that I go to help look after my daughter and was adamant even to the point of tears saying, "He didn't want her living in NY by herself."  Additionally, as an fashion industry professional I see first hand the good, bad and the ugly of modeling and have worked with many girls that have done well as professional models to hear them say, they wouldn't have made it had not their mom been on the journey  with them.  So I packed my bags and made the move with her and after all this was my baby, and we are very close.  Only I had to commute back and forth between DC and NY.  I started blogging a lot more while in Brooklyn (perfect back drop for such) and taking care of wardrobe needs for clients, schlepping stuff through the city back to home base in Brooklyn and really learned to make this city my own! While Symone is a grounded, pretty efficient young lady, there were times she needed me for more than emotional support, so of course I went into full mommy-mode!  Apart from living and thriving in the BK, not only was I working when home in DC, but I was also helping my elderly, health-challenged parents. The apartment in Brooklyn was fab - neat, cozy, contemporary and spacious (by both BK or DC standards), but my home in DC was in disarray.  This all was draining to say the least and I needed to get some things back in order.  In the midst of our time away we lost several loved ones back here at home and my dad got sick in May 2016. He went into the hospital and hasn't yet recovered enough to return home.  With all this going on I knew I had to come home. Symone decided she didn't want to stay either, I wanted her to stick it out since it had only been a year, but she wanted to return home to plot her next course of action.  She shared with me later, that when leaving in that big moving truck back to DC crossing that Brooklyn Bridge, she cried feeling like she had made a mistake for not staying. I don't know, only God does. But I would had rather her to have at least crossed that bridge taking a chance on herself, than to not cross it all and look back with regret.

My take away, Symone didn't do as good as her first few seasons in NYC and I wasn't able to work as much as I would have liked there, but I felt like the bridge of style, more that of lifestyle, I built and left there was the heart of dedication and commitment to who and what I believed in - the success and stability of my daughter.  The priority of family is always my lifestyle in state or out.  Although the crazy up and down world of modeling can be so unstable, my daughter could find comfort and security once she walked into her doors at home in NY because we would always be there to love and support her no matter what.  In addition to new contacts who are native New Yorkers, I made some great friends who like us, left the comforts of another city they called home, to pursue that bridge that would lead to new opportunities and the realization of their dreams.  New York, the place where dreams are made, is special to me and Brooklyn will also have a place in my heart (my 2nd home). Everyone's destination and journey there is not the same, but the important thing is that you stay the course, reroute when you need to and be open and flexible in your travels. I certainly learned a lot about myself!  I admit it hurt me that she left and that I had to leave because I felt we left some things unfinished, but I know Brooklyn isn't the only bridge out there for me to cross but there many physical and emotional bridges I must cross as I evolve and become the person that God has called me to be. I'm still becoming and doing so in firm #SybilStreetSTYLe

Floral Crush

Floral prints were big this season, as least for me, they were huge on my Fashion Hit List - you probably could tell from my last post! When I laid eyes on this fresh, flouncy piece I knew I had to share it for you beauties. For this look I was all set to head outdoors to the more lush parts of the very urban Brooklyn, but unfortunately mama was so focused and hurried to get things done, I didn't watch the weather report that morning so I was unaware the rain was going to meet me at the front door.  I thank God for always being Plan B ready - downstairs lobby!  Yes, this Tracy Reese dress is so beautiful with its hot pink and poppy print, would have been perfect shot against the beauty of nature (what little can be found in the BK), but we worked it out and because it is so strong by itself, it captivates and wows regardless of the backdrop and the weather.  This strapless number is great for sunny outdoor events - brunches, lunches and stay or away vacays. I'm sure you can see why I had a major crush on the floral print, it's colors and the shape & style of this lovely dress. I feel like this fun and feminine piece would even transition nicely into early fall worn with a jacket and tall boots (or booties), it's just that cute and oh so ladylike!  If you do, I'll bet you get a lot of crushes on you! #SybilStreetSTYLe

Summer's Last BLOOM!

For this post I took some of my old favorites and mixed it with a new frock. For one I love dusters as they add a layer of fly chicness to a look. As, well I love the versatility of this "shirt dress" that doubles as a duster. The floral print stood out providing some nice texture and I like that although it's lightweight it's not see through therefore can be worn for day or night. If worn at night this could even be styled with a spaghetti strap tank dress in a beautiful raspberry color with a open- front ankle strap sandal, cute clutch or berry color furry cross body bag. Even with a cute pair of short-shorts and a bustier or cami with lace contrast or simply as a dress with a pair of pumps fay. It's a versatile piece, so many things can be done to make for a super cute, occasion appropriate look! 

In this look, I just pulled out my vegan leather culottes for a bit of edge, the lace up pumps for sassiness, a white tank with a deep u neck line for a nice day appeal, with a hint of sexiness and shot set against a cool backdrop of  foliage and my daughters fire escape in Brooklyn . I even snuck in a pic (see down below) of how I remixed this look a bit going from zero to 100 real quick with the simple addition of a pair of Adidas all-stars kicks for an urban street style vibe! #SybilStreetSTYLe

Went straight Urban on ya! Sidebar: Stan Smith Adidas are super cool, but I think shell toes with the black stripes are even color and gives your look an edge and mad flavor like none other (and my feet feel a lot better, LOL)!  Agree???

That's A Wrap - Farewell Costa Rica You Were Amazing & So Good To Us!

This is it folks, our final hooray, as I wrap up our trip with some highlights of our time exploring Tamarindo. Also a beach town, Tamarindo is a bit more popular and a little on the higher end of the scale than that of Playa Coco (Coco Beach) and they certainly capitalize on how active the town is. There where lots of local shops and restaurants, which because of all the activity caused prices to be higher for local crafts and products and even the food. Price aside, I found the town to be full of character and very spirited! We came across this colorific wheel and because I love color, I went for it. Even if you don't like color as much as me, I think you'll agree that this supercool! 

I think of myself as a friendly, kind-hearted Christian valued woman, but after spending time in a country that's considered one of the happiest in the world, it certainly made me amp up my outlook on gratitude and my expression of joy! Ticos are a very laid back and gracious people. As in the sign that greeted us as we entered Tamarindo, Pura Vida, as the Tico's say, is not only a saying but it's a way of life! The Spirit of Pure Life was alive and thriving and that memory and even more so the 'sentiment' will forever remain with me. #SybilStreetSTYLe

Hubs relishing our final few hours of the last evening we spent here in The Westin's main lobby, then on to dinner at the resort's French restaurant located here. He enjoys collecting cigars; the one above was purchased at their Pro Golf shop. I must reiterate that the service, fine dining restaurants, amenities and accommodations of The Westin Playa Conchal were exceptional and far exceeded our expectations. The staff went over and above to ensure that our stay was the absolute best it could be, and it was. And again, not only because of the pool as I stated in one (or two) of my prior posts, but it was hard to leave this place!

Final farewell - peace until we meet again Costa Rica!  We set out for fun and relaxation but gained so much more :-)

Costa Rica X #SybilStreetSTYLe Restful, Playful Days Part 4

Hola everyone! As this tropical paradise was sadly coming to a close, so were our out and abouts doing the town. With so many comforts and amenities at the resort, we both decided to do a lazy Saturday type situation and spend the part of the day by the pool just relaxing and enjoying the opportunity and glorious option to just simply do nothing. This is rare b/c at home we are always busy and on-the-go in our normal day-to-day. And I must admit, I like cultural exploration so much that when we travel I have the tendency to overbook our days with tours and activities so much so that I need another vacation from being on vacation, LOL!

This was our 28th anniversary, so we did get dressed and went just a few feet across the way to have breakfast outdoors at Farinellile's exclusive to where we stayed. Funny, before our food was served we had some visitors to join us - the cutest Jay Birds that were on a mission. I heard, but paid no attention to Hubs talking about his conversation with one of the bartenders at one of the other on-site restaurants about how the birds come to get packets of sugar. I guess I just didn't believe it. This first fella pictured below (there ended up being three in total) caught my attention, so of course I wanted to get him on camera. A gentleman also there having breakfast, sees me trying to point and shoot and says, if you want him to come closer just put a few packs of these down on your table - sugar- throwing a few down on his. Ok, I was a bit skeptical at first. Then I relented and threw a few down to see if it really worked. Ah ha, look at the picture below, you can see for yourself. Seeing is definitely believing! These beautiful, but sly little nuggets go around confiscating packs of sugar from bars and restaurants - how cute and funny is that! Who would have known,- not me!!! After all that excitement we goofed off a bit around the property, taking some pics, enjoying its beauty then hung out at the pool before heading back to do lazy Saturday in true form - in bed watching television! I felt so liberated, whew! Since it was our anniversary, we did have a nice, late dinner at the resort's French restaurant, but otherwise did absolutely nothing which made us absolutely delighted - real rest & relaxation in our piece of paradise! #SybilStreetSTYLe

My breakfast buddies! You see little guy in the last image, he hardly left any sugar for me, I'm like sir do you have to take some to all of your friends!!! If I didn't witness this for myself, I wouldn't have believed it. I'm still shaking my head in amazement! 

I loved being able to walk out of our room daily to the beauty and tranquility of this enclosed garden courtyard at the Royal Beach Club. This fountain and itsy bitsy tropical oasis were pure bliss! It was like having my own step and repeat or photo op on deck, as I'm sure you can tell from all the pics! Do you not agree that it was just lovely, who wouldn't want to start snapping pics in the midst of all this!

See how all the colors of nature, architecture and my outfit just worked so perfectly together! And look below, I'm not the only one loving the photoshoot ready spot - go Hubs! I promise you, he had other shorts/trunks in some cool colors and prints, because I bought them, but he refused to wear them saying, the lime ones, were too comfortable and felt like terry cloth, smh!!!

Leaving out the other way through our patio was really nice too - it led directly to the pool, bar and restaurant, yassss! What an amazing resort, check out another video below! This was the golf course - one of Hub's prerequisite wen choosing where to stay while we were away, as he loves to play the game - The Westin delivered!

Styling In The Jungle With Volcanic Mud Of Costa Rica Part 3

I love amusement parks, so it's no wonder I chose an excursion tour that would include waterfalls, water slides and zip lining for our amusement, in nature's playground! This tour was located at the than Buena Vista Lodge & Adventure that included all those activities plus volcanic mud baths, hot springs and more! I opted not to ride horseback down to our first stop at the hot springs, but rather took a tractor down the windy, bumpy mountainside. Once we arrived, they had us to sit in the steam bath for several minutes to open our pores, then we soaked in the volcanic mud. After it was all dried to our skin then came rinsing and off to soak in the hot springs. Rinsing off with cool water, then immersing ourselves in the hot water of the springs was so invigorating.  

I must say the drive up and around this mountain to get to the lodge was no easy feat. Neither was hiking to the waterfall or going up to get to the water slide in the jungle. I joked that we looked like Tarzan and Jane with all the mud on us, but I truly felt like them as well after all the vigorous hiking and frockling in the jungle! After it was all over with, we ended our full day back at the resort with a nice dinner out and some pretty lively nightlight entertainment. Anyone that knows me, is aware I love the color pink, so when i noticed this beautiful Cola de Pez, featuring my favorite color, I had to capture it!

These shots were so hilarious, I really felt like we were giving off that Tarzan and Jane thing, while cleansing our skin and our souls, LOL! How did we do, you guys think we pulled it off?

Having some fun in the hot springs. There were three in all, with each different temperatures. The first one was really hot, the second one not-so-warm and the third just right! I also have a pic included from when I came down the water slide giving a thumbs up, cuz i made it - see that video below and look at what they jokingly call sexy diapers to prevent burns and chaffing when coming down the slide!

This was the hot spring that was just right! In the video right below, Hubs joke how my phone case is waterproof but wouldn't take any pictures under water as it claimed to perform, smh!

Here, happily back at the Westin resort.  When it was all said and done, the night was still young and we set out to enjoy every bit of it!

I was trying to get a wide shot of the band performing, but their performance was great nonetheless and we had a wonderful evening - dinner, cocktails, a magic show and live music!

Costa Rica Part 2- Jet Skis & The Comeback

Pura Vida - Pure Life!!!

So here we go again, Part 2 of our Costa Rican adventure. Guys, in the image above I had the thumbs down going on. That's the face you make when you totally wipe out on jet skis. We started off good and was having a ton of fun while Hubs was driving and doing all his tricks as if he was driving his dirt bike, go figure. The problem came when we switched places to allow me reigns to drive. Since this was my first time actually driving a jet ski, I was unaware that you needed to start off fast rather than slow and then pick of your momentum, which is what I was doing – slow walking the situation. Well I know now, and learned the hard way! Because I eased at the power, and slowly took off, the darn thing flipped over and I went in with it smack dab into the Pacific! I went first then Hubs went next. When it was all over, we and some other couples who were watching on the beach had a good laugh. But I tell you what, when I was under the water it was no laughing matter, especially for a girl that can't swim! All I kept thinking while under was, how deep is this water and am I going to make it back to the top, Oh My God! Hubs hollered as the staff came running to our rescue, "Get her, she can't swim!" Note y'all, he told them to get me, not him coming to get me - he was over it:):):):) Check out the video below, smh

Well at least we started off on a high note!  Notice the expression on my face below - my how the tide had changed! I was like seriously Sybil! Click the video below. 

After all the laughing and jokes from Hubs about how I was trying to kill us and how he had drank enough ocean water, there was nothing else to do but to go take a dip in the pool - the safe-free, non-motorized water sports zone! I wasn't complaining not one bit, the fresh water was so inviting, warm and relaxing. This pool is certainly a de-stressor and quite entertaining. And the only drinking I was doing at this point was my cocktail of choice, can anyone say, "Amaretto Sour please?"  Tastes a lot better than beach water, hmp!  The pool and cocktails - what a way to comeback right!!!

Upon first glance of this pic, you might be thinking I'm highlighting the beautiful scenery of the pool area, which I was but take a closer look. Hubs was trying to imitate a covert Navy Seal tactic in the water. If you didn't notice him initially, I'd say he did a pretty good job! He was playing the part guys, he had his camo hat on and everything. I needed that strategy back when I was under the water, not now, LOL!

Here's to all-inclusive days and Hurricane cocktails! Truthfully speaking, a girl got spoiled by the all-inclusive perks - endless cocktails, being waited on hand-and-foot, room service etc., this is the good life baby or as Tico's call it "Pura Vida.", Heck, the fab perks wiped away all my memories of my wipe out!

Just another shot of the tropical pool area - so lovely and serene! It was so hard to leave and hard not to take pictures, it's like always photoshoot ready!!!.

On to our next stop, the lively beach town of Playa Coco!  We did finally leave the pool at our resort to get out to visit this beach and do some further exploration. We ended up here at Playa Coco (Coco Beach), also in the province of Guanacaste!  This town is really tourist-y and reminds me of the bustling boardwalks found on the beaches back home in Ocean City, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE. The Tico's were really nice and it's a great place to purchase all types of hand-crafted goods & souvenirs genuine to the culture of the country and to experience an authentic taste of Costa Rican cuisine - raw and uncut. #SybilStreetSTYLe

In the pics above I was just standing on the beach in admiration of this view but of the awesomeness of God and His handy work. So when I seen this surf board around Coco Beach town saying the word GRACE, to me it further affirmed the splendor and kindness of our Lord (I embrace and am thankful for GRACE)!. Next, was just a cute little beachfront restaurant we stopped by. Then, we happened upon this colorful tree on the beach, and since I'm a colorific girl, inspired by pink, I had to capture it. Besides how often to do happen upon a tree that looks like something straight out of a Dr. Seuss book, Ha!

Costa Rica Adventure Summer '16 - The Streets Do Guanacaste! Part 1

Hey Everyone, I'm excited to be able to share with you our six-day vacation spent in the magical country of Costa Rica. Hubs and I celebrated 28 years of marriage during our time away on July 23rd- such as blessing!  We stayed & played at the lush, beautiful and picturesque Westin Playa Conchal All-Inclusive Golf & Spa Resort located on Costa Rica's North Pacific Riviera on the sparkling Conchal beach. The resort and beach is nestled in the rich Guanacaste area of Costa Rica, which happens to be the largest and most visited province in the country . Wheels down - checked in and ready to play! The Westin's staff welcomed us with a spectacular reception that included cool towels, pineapple mojitos, a plethora of Costa Rican refreshments and an abundance of hospitality in true Tico (what the natives call themselves) "Pura Vida" style. Pura Vida translates, "Pure Life." I can't begin to tell you how friendly, attentive and courteous the staff was there.  It was like southern hospitality to the 10th degree! This huge 2,400 acre resort, full of everything you need for a super relaxing and fun vacation, comprised of various types of rooms and two sides - family and adult only. Our accommodations, located in the adult only Royal Beach Tower, was nicely appointed with 'all' the amenities and great amount of space for a home away from home, but probably much better than your home!. I had heard prior, that bathtubs are not the norm in Costa Rica, so when I found that our room had one I was pleasantly surprised. I was even more delighted when we arrived to see such a deep contemporary tub in our bathroom, in addition to a separate shower with a rainfall head. We even had our own pool and private restaurant just a few steps away from our room, exclusive to guests of the Royal Beach Tower. The pool view was a nice touch! 

In the image above, we were sitting poolside actually waiting for our room. Without our asking, the pool attendant graciously served us drinks and shared a very friendly conversation with us. After which, they took our bags to our room, we got settled, changed clothes and hit the beach. After the beach we enjoyed a nice dinner and cocktails at one of the beautiful open-air restaurants (8 total fine dining establishments on the property). Funning and watching the sunset on the beach (click video above) was an amazing experience!

Soaking it all in - I was simply mesmerized by the resort's natural beauty! Wearing a J Crew floral tropical print cami and matching cotton shorts - the perfect contrast to nature's decor. 

I found this BCBG Giselle dress at Macys in Herald Square NYC and actually purchased it in white and this green shade called oasis. It also came in a natural and orange color as well, so the choices were tuff. It's lightweight and loose so it's not only cute, but very comfortable. I went with the oasis color which worked out wonderfully with my current accessories and sandals and the colors of nature. Besides, white especially in that setting, can get dirty very quickly. I was able to use one of my scarves from several years ago to wrap around my hair to add more interest. along with my gold sandals, gold sunnies and a multi color crossbody that anchored my orange lip color and viola - you have a cute, comfy, sassy vacay appropriate look.

Part of the beauty of the Westin is being able to enjoy the local wildlife of Costa Rica on the resort. We discovered some new friends just wandering the property freely doing their natural thing - monkeys, coatis, iguanas and a beautiful toucan! 

Monkey business! You see me holding the phone above, well I was trying to get a good capture of the monkey up in the tree. One perk of the resort is having someone to drive you around to the different activities and places on the grounds. One driver in particular, Dixon, we became very fond of him. During one of our rides back from the main lobby to our room, we had a nice little talk about the monkeys at the reserve, but we had yet to see them. When getting ready to venture back out we see Dixon again and he says, "I seen the monkeys!" He offered to take us to see the monkeys first, then to our destination. How nice, we agreed! And so there you have me trying to get pics of this guy, high in the sky!

It was hard to leave this area - the pool, swim-up bar and restaurant exclusive to guests staying in the all adult Royal Beach Tower section of the resort. Not only  super easy on the eyes, but so very relaxing as well. It was great waking up to this view every morning and playing in this sandbox, LOL!.

Loved our summer playground, how could we not! It was simply amazing, like our very own little piece of paradise for six days!

When deciding what pieces to take on our trip, I chose pieces that were full of color, comfortable and easy to pack. Mission Accomplished - bright, fun colors set against the best backdrop of all - nature - is always a good way to go!

It was an awesome first two days! Stay tuned for more adventure and some funny shenanigans with my Jay Bird friend who came for breakfast and my jet ski wipe out!
