Coney Island Swag - The Art & It's People

June 20, 2017

Cue the music: "Brooklyn home to the greatest rappers, BIG comes first and the Queen comes after" ~ "Lil Kim. Anyone that knows me is very much aware that I love Brooklyn (although at times (a lot) when I was living there it was a love/hate relationship, LOL).  I love the unique energy, the culture with its edge and grittiness and the backdrop that Brooklyn provides for photographic adventures.  Brooklyn's art and culture provides plenty to see, do and explore. One thing I like to see  there is the Coney Art Walls and do is take pictures, while visiting the boardwalk.  Coney Art Walls is an outdoor museum of curated street art presented by several of the leading painters and sculptures in New York, in addition to leading artists connected with street culture. Located in the heart of the Coney Island Amusement District, Coney Art Walls is adjacent to the original Nathan’s hot dog restaurant and within walking distance of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park and Luna Park home of the iconic Cyclone roller coaster, etc. (see photo gallery)

Don't get me wrong, as I posted a caption on IG somewhat comparing Coney's art walls to those in Miami, I've been to Miami and witnessed how great the murals are at Wynwood Walls, but for me it's just something about art walls in BK, they have heat and heart.  Sidebar: In terms of beachin' hands down Miami reigns, Florida period as far as white sand and clear waters are concerned. That's a no brainer! I love the walls, and the lived experience with its grimy undertones, walking the boardwalk, doing the amusement park thing at Coney. But mama not getting in the water! Back to the topic at hand, BK arts walls and it's edge, I think it has everything to do with the area and the spirit of the people that seems to just float in the air.  The collision of art, hip hop (on heavy rotation at CI) and rawness are all so organic. Despite the fact that many of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn have become gentrified and cosmopolitan, it's just some mad, creative expression and dopeness that resonates from the people that are from there and not just go there.

That BK flavor just puts me in the zone, I just go with it and start postin up for the cam. How could one not, with all that dopeness as a backdrop, you'd be crazy! The boughetto comes out (multiple personalities of Sybil) and I starting sanging BIG, Hov and Lil Kim lyrics!  My look had to reflect all that flavor, dopeness etc that I've been  ranting about, so I felt this Chicago Bulls bodysuit was thee best choice (my Topshop in the DMV doesn't carry the NY one, both are linked, Bulls comes in black as well) but I like red better anyway paired with my cargo jacket and these frayed, jean shorts.  I accesorized with my Brian Atwood  sandals, a Forever 21 tinted black translucent visor and Urban Outfitters black rimmed, tinted aviator sunnies. Did you happen to see the feather hem I added to my military jacket! I tricked it out a little and did it so I could remove it when switching the look up! How's that for some Brooklyn X #SybilStreetSTYLe, boughetto ain't so bad afterall!!!

DMV homies - my girlfriend from high school, Lashon and her oldest daughter, Darnae'.  My mini-me Symone, who I lived in Brooklyn with. Lashon and I had our girls around the same time, and they've remained friends there entire lives.

When we were taking shots of the various walls, this gentlemen made me laugh when turning sideways to take his pic! This is Alfred, who hails from Mobile Alabama, now residing in the Bronx, who just happens to be the butler for Giorgio Armani!
